Root canal treatment is available as an alternative to losing a sore tooth that has pulp disease. Sometimes a deep filling, large area of decay or tooth fracture can cause the “live” area of the tooth to become irreversibly inflammed or die. As long as the supporting structures around the tooth are healthy (bone & gums) then the tooth’s canal can be “cleaned out” while it is in your mouth. The root canal procedure is completed with regular freezing so that the dentist can remove the diseased pulp comfortably. The empty space created is washed out with different solutions and dried. A rubber cork (gutta percha) is then fit to the canals and cemented in place so no leakage occurs.
