Single tooth implants are very successful and provide a much better alternative to a fixed 3 unit bridge where teeth on either side of the tooth space are ground down to support an overlying cemented bridge. In some cases if the abutment tooth requires a crown due to the presence of a root canal or missing tooth structure, a conventional fixed bridge can serve the two purposes in protecting the broken down tooth and closing the space. Generally if all else is healthy, a dental implant is a better alternative.
In cases of multiple missing teeth, there are times when the space is too large for a fixed cemented dental bridge because the supporting teeth would be overloaded and fail. Yet the patient does not want any removable partial dentures. Multiple implants placed at strategic areas in the mouth can be made to support an overlying fixed bridge. It is permanent and feels natural and is a great alternative to a removable bridge.
Patients that have lower full dentures which are unstable and move around when talking and eating can now secure them with 2 or 4 locator implants. These implants are used to support the overlying denture so that it does not move nor contact the gum tissue. It is secure and allows you to bite into anything you did with natural teeth.
